Leo, the rescue dog who
detected eight-year-old Giorgia buried under the rubble in the
Marche village of Pescara del Tronto after a devastating
earthquake in central Italy on August 24, will be in attendance
at a special papal audience for volunteers and rescue workers on
September 3.
Leo will be in St. Peter's Square with his handler Matteo
Palladinetti and the director of the Pescara police department's
K9 unit, Chief Superintendent Liborio Desimone.
Italian Premier Matteo Renzi and German Chancellor Angela
Merkel on Wednesday met Leo together with the fire fighters who
extracted Giorgia from the debris of her home 16 hours after the
6.2-magnitude quake struck, leaving 293 dead.
Giorgia's 10-year-old sister was found dead beside her
while her parents were both pulled out alive.
