Climate change is
contributing to the "excruciating" crisis of forced migration,
Pope Francis said on Thursday in a message for the Catholic
Church's World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation.
Francis said the world's poor are the least responsible for
climate change, but the most affected by it, and he made an
appeal to "hear the cry of the Earth as much as the cry of the
poor".
"We can't resign ourselves or be indifferent to the loss of
biodiversity and ecosystem destruction, often caused by our
irresponsible and egotistical behaviors," he said.
"When we mistreat nature, we also mistreat human beings".
He called on governments and economic leaders to respect
the Paris Agreement on climate change adopted in December 2015.
He also proposed "care of our common home" as an additional
act of mercy, "complimentary to the two traditional lists of
seven works of mercy".
