A young woman from a Rome parish
died Monday of meningitis while on her way back from the Polish
city of Krakow, where she attended the Catholic Church's World
Youth Day event.
She died in Vienna, the Italian Bishops' Conference (CEI)
said in a statement.
The members of the group with which she attended the WYD
have all been given prophylactic treatment, and the Vienna
hospital where she died called on anyone who was at Italy House
in Krakow, which was the headquarters for the CEI youth pastor
program, to immediately seek treatment.
Meningitis is highly contagious and can be rapidly fatal if
left untreated.
Italy was present at the WYD that ran through July 25-31 in
Krakow with 486 groups and a total of 76,883 pilgrims,
organizers tweeted on day the event kicked off.
