Pope Francis, in his
general audience on Wednesday, recognized the third annual UN
International Day of Sport for Development and Peace and said
that sport is a "universal language" that brings people together
and contributes to overcoming conflicts.
"Therefore I encourage experiencing sport as a gym of
virtue in the integral growth of individuals and the community,"
Pope Francis said.
In his general audience dedicated to mercy in the life of
Jesus, he encouraged the more than 20,000 faithful gathered in
St Peter's Square to refrain from judging others as sinners and
instead focus on one's own possibility for repentance and
forgiveness.
"We mustn't fear our miseries, every one of us has his or
her own, but the power of love on the cross knows no obstacles
and never ends, and this mercy cancels out our miseries," he
said.
