Genoa archbishop, Cardinal
Angelo Bagnasco, on Tuesday expressed indignation after new data
from Oxfam showed the world's 62 richest billionaires own as
much wealth as the poorer half of the global population.
"Poverty continues to rise in the world while wealth also
grows," Bagnasco, who heads the Italian Bishops' Conference
(CEI), said on the sidelines of a meeting with Mayor Andrea
Doria.
"This is unacceptable," he said.
"Inequality is an issue that doesn't go out of fashion,"
Bagnasco continued.
"Unfortunately if anything it is becoming more fashionable
because the gap between those who have increasingly more and
those who have increasingly less is getting bigger," he said.
"What to do? People in positions of greatest responsibility
and with the greatest skills must identify strategies to reverse
the trend, but we must all do as much as possible to show
solidarity and help one another. Not just assistance but also
cooperation is needed to create more work and employment,"
Bagnasco concluded.
