Vatican Spokesman
Father Federico Lombardi on Wednesday said he has "no idea how
many" Holy Doors will be opened in Catholic dioceses throughout
the world for the Jubilee Holy Year of Mercy.
"I don't think anyone (knows) - there are those who have
three of them, those who have six, those who have nine - it's a
truly new situation, this multiplicity of doors, we don't have a
precedent," Lombardi said.
"One must look at the multiplicity and the situations in
which they are opened, which indicate closeness to peripheries
and the poor," he said.
Lombardi said there are no estimates yet as to how many
people have walked through the Holy Door at St. Peter's
Basilica, which Pope Francis opened on December 8.
As to criticism of those who seem to view the Jubilee as a
tourist event, he said "we're always working to make people
aware" of its meaning.
