Pope Francis will visit three locations in total during his visit to Cuba in September, the Cuban bishops' conference has said.
"In addition to the city of Havana, his point of arrival, the pope will visit the city of Holguin, the sanctuary of EL Cobre and Santiago de Cuba, from where he will depart for the United States," the Cuban bishops said in a statement released Monday. It will be the third time a pope visits the Caribbean island and follows a recent thaw in relations between Cuba and the United States mediated by Francis himself. Pope John Paul II visited Cuba in January 1998 and Benedict XVI in March 2012. Cuban President Raul Castro visited Francis at the weekend and said if the pontiff continued with his progressive-minded statements, "I will start praying again myself". Francis will be in Cuba from September 19 to 22.
