Pop superstar Elton John says
that Pope Francis "is my hero" for his compassion and courage in
opening the Church slightly towards gays.
Francis should eventually be made a saint, added John, who
reportedly made the comments at his annual AIDS fundraiser in
New York City.
"He is a compassionate man who wants everybody to be
included in the love of God," John said, according to Sky News
reports.
"It is formidable what he is trying to do against many,
many people in the Church," added John, who has been knighted by
Queen Elizabeth.
"He is courageous and he is fearless, and that's what we
need in the world today," the singer-songwriter told the crowd
at the fund-raiser.
"Make this man a saint now, OK?"
Soon after becoming pope last year, Francis made headlines
around the world by showing an opening towards more
compassionate treatment of homosexuals by the Church.
"If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am
I to judge?," the pope said in July 2013.
