The family is the main building block of society, Pope Francis tweeted Thursday, four days after the end of an extraordinary synod on the family that reaffirmed its fundamental role.
"The family is the place in which we are formed as persons.
Each family is a brick that builds society," Francis said.
The synod ended Sunday with a reaffirmation of dogma about the traditional family.
Despite high hopes on liberal stances vocally espoused by Francis, it only obtained a simple majority - but not the two-thirds required - on accepting gays and giving sacraments to divorced and remarried Catholics.
The followers of the pope's nine-language Twitter account, @Pontifex, passed the 16-million mark earlier this month.
Francis's most popular accounts are: in Spanish, 6.96 million; in English, 4.58 million; and in Italian, 2.03 million.
He has 1.171 million Portuguese-language followers; 308,000 followers in French; 287,000 in Latin; 280,000 in Polish; 218,000 in German; and 156,500 in Arabic.
His predecessor Benedict XVI opened the papal Twitter account, sending his first tweet on December 12, 2012.
Since becoming pope 19 months ago Francis has increased the following more than five-fold.
