Pope Francis on Wednesday
asked the faithful to pray for the success of a two-week
extraordinary session of the synod of bishops that opens on
Sunday with a focus on the family.
During his weekly general audience, Francis also urged
followers to give thanks for the "rich and varied gifts" given
by the Holy Spirit, including "charisms" or spiritual gifts,
which he said are useful to the entire community.
"In the Christian community, we need each and every gift
which are fully applicable for the good of all," said Francis.
"The same Spirit which gives us the variety of charisms
gives the unity of the Church, it is the same Spirit," he added.
"Today, let us ask the Lord to help us recognize with
gratitude this great outpouring of spiritual gifts which enables
the Church to persevere in faith, to grow in grace and to be an
ever more credible sign and witness of God's infinite love,"
said Francis.
About 150 bishops from around the world are expected to
take part in the meetings, the first of two extraordinary synods
on the family that are designed to lead to new pastoral
guidelines in this area.
The event, which will include discussions on dealing with
such issues as divorce, couples living together outside of
marriage, homosexuality, and related matters, will end with a
Mass on October 19.
