ANSA) - Vatican City, September 23 - Cardinal Gerhard
Mueller, prefect of the Vatican congregation for the doctrine of
the faith, met with leading Lefebvrian Bernard Fellay in the
Vatican City Tuesday.
The encounter, referred to as "cordial and serene" by
Vatican spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi lasted a couple of
hours and was described as a step in the gradual process of
reconciliation between the Vatican and the ultra-traditionalist
Catholics belonging to the St. Pius X Confraternity, the
grouping of followers of Msgr. Marcel Lefebvre.
The St. Pius X Confraternity and the Vatican have been
trying to reconcile for many years but the process has
see-sawed.
It was derailed for some time after then pope Benedict XVI
revoked the ex-communication of Holocaust-denying Bishop Richard
Williamson in 2009.
