Pope Francis on Friday paid a surprise visit to a Vatican employee cafeteria, where he lunched alongside a dozen blue-collar workers, L'Osservatore Romano newspaper tweeted.
Francis waited his turn in line like everyone else, cafeteria chef Franco Paini told Vatican Radio.
"He had the cod and some plain pasta". Catholics traditionally abstain from red meat and eat fish in a sign of penance on Friday, the day the canon says Christ was crucified.
"We introduced ourselves," Paini went on. "He asked us how we are, what our work is like. Then he blessed us, had his picture taken with us, and left".
The surprise lunchtime visit lasted about an hour. Also on Friday, publicly-owned Trenitalia train operator announced it has set up three special trains for the faithful wishing to travel to the southern city of Caserta, which the pope will visit on Saturday.
