Rome would be making a mistake
not to bid to host the 2024 Olympics but the final decision is
up to Mayor Virginia Raggi, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi
told RTL private FM radio on Thursday.
Renzi said the Olympics would bring money to the city's
outskirts and believes Rome is "in the lead" following work with
the Italian Olympic Committee, CONI, on the city's bid.
"But the decision is up to the city and we'll acknowledge
it either way," Renzi said, adding that "it would be very sad"
if Rome were to withdraw its candidacy.
"If the city decides no, it means that in 2028 we'll put
forward another city," Renzi said.
