Alessia Mesiano on Friday won the
world boxing championship title in the 57 kg division by beating
India's Sonia Lather on points in Astana.
Mesiano, a 24-year-old policewoman from Latina south of
Rome, won Italy's first world title since Simona Galassi 11
years ago.
Italian police chief Franco Gabrielli congratulated Mesiano
for "making history".
Last month Irma Testa qualified for the Rio Olympics,
becoming the first Italian woman boxer to take part in an
Olympic Games.
Testa, 18, from Torre Annunziata near Naples, is a European
champion and world junior champ at the 54 kg weight limit.
