Pope Francis met "number
one fan" Argentinian soccer legend Diego Maradona on Thursday at
a press conference in Rome.
The Pontiff was presenting Scholas Occurrentes, the
world-wide, inter-religious educational network which will
include the participation of the South American Football
Federation and several world-famous soccer players such as
Maradona, who was present.
The World Cup winner called the Pope "fantastic" and "a
phenom who will do something for children", and added "I am the
number supporter of Pope Francis".
South American Football Federation has pledged $10,000 for
every goal and every penalty kick saved during the June 2015
Copa Amèrica.
Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences Chancellor Monsignor
Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo said that lack of education contributed
to "reason we have wars", and said that the Pope involved
athletes to reach out to children because "when athletes, who
are a bit of a myth like Maradona, engage, it is a great help".
The Monsignor added that politicians are participating as
well.
