AS Roma face a tense showdown with Manchester City in their last Champions League Group E match next month after Tuesday's cruel 1-1 draw at CSKA Moscow.
Rudi Garcia's side looked to be close to qualification thanks to captain Francesco Totti's powerful free kick just before halftime on Moscow on Tuesday.
The strike also enabled Totti to break his own record as the Champions League's oldest scorer, setting a new mark of 38 years and 59 days.
But the Serie A side were denied a precious win by Vasili Berezutski's cross-shot equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time.
The draw means that Roma and group rivals Manchester City and CSKA all have a shot of joining Bayern Munich, who have 12 points from five games and are sure to top the group, in the knockout stages of Europe's premier club competition. Roma, CSKA and English City, who came from behind to beat Bayern 3-2 at home on Tuesday, all have three points a piece.
The Italian outfit need to beat City at Rome's Stadio Olimpico on December 10 to be sure of progressing.
A draw will suffice if CSKA draw with Bayern in their last group game, but only a 0-0 draw will get them through if CSKA lose to Bayern, on the basis of complicated goal-difference calculations. In any other case, such as a score draw with City if Bayern beat CSKA, Roma will be out.
