Giovanni Malagò, president of
the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), on Monday said
there's no reason for alarmism regarding the Zika virus outbreak
currently affecting Brazil, host of the 2016 Summer Olympic
Games in Rio.
"The Institute of Sport Medicine has done a good job, I'm
in contact with experts in infectious diseases, there will even
be a prevention campaign," Malago said.
"At the moment the situation is very calm, there aren't
elements for concern on our part".
Dr. Antonio Spataro, director of CONI's Institute of Sport
Medicine, concurred.
"There is alarmist news but I don't think we need to
overreact," Spataro said.
"The International Olympic Committee is in close contact
with the World Health Organisation and the Brazilian
authorities, to draft guidelines to follow," he said.
"We're working in close contact with the epidemiology
institute here in Rome, at Spallanzani Hospital".
