A new system allowing online access
to the public administration will be launched in December, the
Agency for Digital Italy said Tuesday.
The announcement came after finalisation of the regulatory
framework for Italy's new so-called public digital identity
system (SPID), more commonly known as the 'single pin code'.
"We have reached a turning point," said AGID
Director-General Antonio Samaritani, adding that the
accreditation procedure for SPID code managers would begin in
September.
Under the new system, all companies and private individuals
will be issued with a single pin code giving access to most
on-line services provided by the public administration,
including in the fields of health care and taxation.
The SPID code will be issued free of charge.
For access to services requiring the highest level of
security, the SPID code must be used in combination with a smart
card.
AGID has worked closely with Italy's privacy watchdog to
ensure that the new system is in line with security and data
protection demands, Samaritani said.
The first digital credentials will be issued in those
regions that have already tested the system on a pilot basis:
Piemonte, Emilia Romagna, Tuscany, Liguria, Marches and Friuli
Venezia Giulia.
Further, Italy's inland revenue authority, state pensions
agency INPS and national institute for insurance against
accidents at work INAIL will allow access to their services via
SPID from the outset.
