Italy's researchers should be "decently paid" to stop them joining the brain drain, President Giorgio Napolitano said Thursday.
"More money must be made available by institutions," he said.
Italy is among the lowest per capita research spenders in the OECD.
Fabiola Gianotti's appointment as first female head of the famed CERN lab earlier this week was a sign of how strong Italy is in scientific research, Napolitano said.
