Italy is to receive technical support
from Brussels for the implementation of the Mattei Plan on
grounds it is strategic on the energy front for the whole of
Europe, Director General, EC DG Reform, Mario Nava said on
Tuesday.
The plan launched by the government of Premier Giorgia Meloni to
create a new partnership with African countries to address the
root causes of irregular migration and turn Italy into a sort of
hub for energy supplies "is absolutely strategic on the energy
front not only for Italy but also for Europe", Nava told ANSA.
Presented by Meloni to African leaders earlier this year, the
Mattei Plan comes as the continent tries to reduce its
dependency on Russian oil and gas supplies after Moscow's
invasion of Ukraine.
Other projects selected by Brussels for technical support
through its Technical Support Facility to help EU Member States
design and implement resilience-enhancing reforms at national
level include 'Accelerating the process of renewable energy
permits in Italy', as part of the government's commitment to
launch the Consolidated Renewable Energy Act in the coming
months.
In addition, two projects concern the reduction of seismic and
climate risks for public buildings and one concerns 'Food safety
at national and regional level'.
Of the 15 projects approved by the European Commission for
Italy, seven have a cross-border dimension.
In total the European executive has selected 170 reform projects
for technical support across all 27 member states.
