Health Minister Orazio Schillaci on
Wednesday announced a new national plan to combat waiting lists
in the health sector involving structural measures including the
fight against so-called 'token' doctors", namely self-employed
doctors who are paid by the hour.
The new plan aims to be "a guiding instrument on access to
healthcare services and the management of waiting times and
lists ... based on the promotion of the principle of
appropriateness in its clinical, organisational and prescriptive
dimensions" Schillaci told lawmakers during a parliamentary
question time.
The government of Premier Giorgia Meloni has pledged to bring
down the often biblical hospital waiting times as part of broad
efforts to tackle the problems in the Italian healthcare sector.
