Deputy Premier and Interior Minister
Matteo Salvini on Thursday criticised the European Commission
for being tough on Italy with regards to its public finances
while offering no help to deal with migrants.
"The EU is doing nothing and then it persecutes Italy for a
decimal (of a percentage point) of deficit, of debt," he told
Radio1 regarding the possibility of an infringement procedure.
"We are the third-biggest contributor (to the EU), so let's
not mess about.
"We don't pay Europe to get told off while they look the
other way on immigration.
"We can't feed the whole world, but we have a few million
Italians in difficulty and I'd worry about them first".
