Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi had to be
escorted away by police and was the target of a flurry of sexist
insults after visiting a flat allocated to a Roma family on the
outskirts of the Italian capital on Wednesday.
Residents of the district, Casal Bruciato, have staged fresh
protests against the allocation, saying a Roma woman should be
"raped" and all Roma should be "hanged".
The protesters shouted "shame on you", "dirty cow" and other
heavy sexist insults at Raggi as she left the flat.
A similar protest last year stopped a Roma family taking
possession of their council-allocated flat in Casal Bruciato.
Raggi responded by saying: "This family is the legitimate
recipient of an accommodation.
"They have a right to a home, that is the law.
"Those who insult and threaten should look into their
consciences".
