Minister Danilo Toninelli said Wednesday that the new viaduct
that will replace the Morandi bridge in Genoa will be opened
early in 2020.
The Morandi bridge over the Polcevera river collapsed in
August in a disaster than claimed 43 lives.
On Tuesday it was announced that contract to build the new
bridge has been won by Salini Impregilo, together with
Fincantieri and Italferr.
"We'll see it up on its feet at the end of next year and
we'll inaugurate it at the start of 2020," Toninelli said.
The 202-million-euro project for the new bridge was inspired
by world renowned Genoese architect and life Senator Renzo
Piano, 81.
"It's my gift to the city. I'll work for free," said Piano,
who will supervise the project.
