An incident involving a
League MEP who put his shoe on a report following the European
Commission's rejection of Italy's budget plan was "grotesque",
Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said Wednesday.
The MEP Angelo Ciocca had taken off his shoes and angrily put
one on top of the report, which had been drawn up by the EU
Commissioner.
"Initially ones smiles and banalizes it because it is
ridiculous but later one gets accustomed to a dull, symbolic
sort of violence. And one day you wake up with fascism.
"We must remain vigilant. Democracy is a fragile treasure,"
Moscovici tweeted in French.
The far-right League MEP instead tweeted, using capital
letters for emphasis: "I STEPPED ON (with a Made in Italy
sole!!!) the mountain of LIES that Moscovici wrote AGAINST
OurCountry!!! Italy deserves RESPECT and these #EuroImbeciles
must understand this WE WILL NO LONGER BOW OUR HEADS !!! Did I
do well ???".
An avalanche of negative comments and insults followed his
words on Twitter.
