Bills to cut the number of
Italian MPs and to introduce a new kind of referendum where
measures can be proposed rather than simply abrogated were filed
on Wednesday.
Minister for relations with parliament and direct democracy,
Riccardo Fraccaro of the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement said
"it has always been out political mission to improve
institutions and give more power to citizens".
He said "I am proud to announce that the Constitutional bills
for the reduction of the number of deputies and Senators and the
introduction of the propositional referendum have been
deposited.
"A new era is starting for Italy marked by efficiency and
participation".
The bills will take a long time to be passed, since they
entail changes to the Italian Constitution.
