Premier Matteo Renzi
Thursday arrived in the Marche town of Camerino Thursday on a
visit to communities that were struck by an earthquake last
night. He cancelled all other engagements after two tremors both
registering above 5 on the Richter scale struck shortly after
19:00 and again just after 21:00 on Wednesday evening, leaving
between two and three thousand people homeless. The first 5.4
magnitude quake struck at 19:10 Italian time and was followed by
an even bigger one, of magnitude 5.9, at 21:18. But there were
at least 200 aftershocks too, the National Institute of
Geophysics (INGV) said Thursday. The quake was felt across the
central Marche region, including around the cities of Ascoli,
Ancona, Fabriano and Pesaro. It was also felt in the cities of
Arezzo, Assisi, L'Aquila, Pescara, Perugia, Rieti and Rome,
spanning the Lazio, Tuscany and Umbria regions.
