President Sergio Mattarella
voiced the hope Friday that "a spirit of national unity which is
understandably shown more clearly at times of great difficulty,
may become a permanent trait of our national life". Mattarella
was referring to the wave of solidarity that swept Italy after
the August 24 earthquake that devastated parts of central Italy,
killing 297 people. Italians rushed to help the affected zones
of Lazio, Marche, Umbria and Abruzzo and donated millions of
euros in aid.
