Rome prosecutors are to probe
the appointment of Carla Raineri as Mayor Virginia Raggi's
cabinet chief after the small rightist Brothers of Italy (FdI)
party filed a suit alleging abuse of office, ANSA sources said
Thursday. The probe will also look into the high salary Raineri
was awarded, 193,000 euros a year. Raineri quit earlier Thursday
after anti-corruption authority ANAC said she should have been
appointed by open competition and not cherry-picked for the job.
Raineri's resignation, along with that of budget councillor
Marcello Minenna, has sent the Raggi administration into a
tailspin. Raggi, a member of the anti-establishment 5-Star
Movement (M5S), was elected Rome's first woman mayor in a June
landslide.
