Premier Matteo Renzi's
centre-left Democratic Party (PD) on Monday reiterated calls for
new Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi's trash chief to quit over alleged
conflicts of interest, with uncollected rubbish still on many
streets of the Italian capital.
Executive Environment Councillor Paola Muraro is under
fire over past consulting contracts she had with troubled
refuse-collection agency AMA.
The pressure is increasingly due to a trash crisis in the
city.
Muraro paid a unscheduled visit to AMA's headquarters
last week and demanded a plan to take the capital back to a
situation of normality.
The plan arrived, with a pledge to have the city clean by
August 20, although relations between Muraro and AMA's outgoing
head Daniele Fortini are tense.
On Sunday Raggi stood by Muraro, saying she was doing a
good job and there were no secrets in her CV.
But the calls for her to quit have continued.
"Another conflict of interest for Muraro. More rubbish in
front of their houses for the Romans #resignation," tweeted the
PD's Alessia Rotta.
