Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi said
Monday that the city's troubled trash agency AMA has debts of
over 600 million euros as she outlined her plans to overhaul
rubbish management in the capital.
"At the moment AMA has over 600 million euros of debts,
including 200 million to suppliers, and over 35 million euros
every year goes to the pool of banks that support it," Raggi
said.
"It has around 7,500 employees and a fleet of vehicles
bought for over 200 million euros in 2009 and 2010.
"The company has high industrial costs for each tonne of
rubbish processed and each tonne of separated trash for
recycling delivered and low levels of efficiency in street
cleaning and maintenance of bins on roads.
"The whole of AMA's facilities are suffering from a
three-year maintenance deficit". Raggi said it is necessary to
reorganise AMA and make reducing, reusing and recycling waste
the priorities.
