Tito Boeri, the head of pensions
and social security agency INPS, said Thursday that Premier
Matteo Renzi's government's controversial Jobs Act labour reform
was largely successful.
"I think in the most part it has been a success," Boeri
said at the fringes of a Senate hearing, adding that the reform
had had "important effects".
The Jobs Act, among other things, waters down the law
protecting workers from unfair dismissal for new hires, giving
them gradually rising levels of job protection, in a bid to
encourage firms to take people on with permanent open-ended
contracts.
Unemployment has declined in recent months and INPS has
reported a rise in the number of people employed in steady jobs,
although this has slowed after a decrease in government measures
to encourage new hires by suspending social-security
contributions for some groups of employees.
