The Italian State and society have
the antibodies to attack and defeat all mafia organisations,
President Sergio Mattarella said in a message for the 24th
anniversary of the assassination of anti-mafia prosecutor Paolo
Borsellino on Tuesday.
"To honour Borsellino means to continue his battle,"
Mattarella said.
"Law and the democratic order represent guarantees, in
addition to indispensable strongholds of civilisation. It is the
responsibility of all to proceed with coherence and
determination. The spirit of unity among the best forces of the
community is indispensable in this priority commitment," he
continued. Borsellino was killed by a massive car bomb on July
19, 1992, together with his five police escorts in Palermo's via
D'Amelio near his mother's home. His assassination followed that
of his friend and colleague Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca
Morvillo and three members of his police escort on May 23, 1992,
as they sped along the motorway from Palermo airport to the
city.
