Anti-establishment 5-Star Movement
(M5S) Rome mayoral candidate Virginia Raggi on Tuesday denied
saying it was "criminal" for the city to bid for the 2024
Olympics with its huge budget deficit. "It's criminal to neglect
and snub the real problems of Romans, thinking only of realising
big public works, I obviously wasn't referring to the Olympics,
about which there is no prejudice on the M5S's part, even if our
line doesn't change: Rome must first think of the ordinary and
then the extraordinary," she told ANSA after Italian Olympic
Committee chief Giovanni Malagò called her alleged 'criminal'
jibe "humiliating, offensive and incomprehensible".
