The chair of the parliamentary
watchdog for State broadcaster RAI, anti-establishment 5-Star
Movement (M5S) heavyweight Roberto Fico, on Tuesday accused
Raiuno news (TG1) head Mario Orfeo of "betraying" his mandate by
handing TG1 over to Premier Matteo Renzi's executive. Fico said
he had asked for sanctions from media watchdog AGCOM. "dear
Orfeo," Fico said in a letter, "we have understood that you have
backed the yes in the referendum on Constitutional reforms, but
I'd like to remind you that TG1 belongs to citizens because it
is paid for by citizens". He said TG1 is "in the hands of the
executive" and accuse Orfeo of carrying out his job as its head
"with overweening pride, presumptuousness and
arrogance...betraying his mandate". The M5S is campaigning for a
No vote in the October referendum on the Constitutional reform,
which would turn the Senate into a smaller, regional body with
limited lawmaking powers.
