Over 100 migrants were
identified on Monday in Ventimiglia after a police operation to
clear a camp at the city on the border with France.
The operation followed an order from Mayor Enrico
Ioculano, who suspended his membership of Premier Matteo Renzi's
Democratic Party (PD) last week along with several local
councillors in protest at the lack of assistance in dealing with
the situation.
Around 95 of the migrants were transferred to reception
centres in the southern cities of Bari and Catania.
Most are set to be sent back to their homelands although
about 10 have permits to stay based on the need for
international protection.
Several minors were put under the responsibility of the
social services.
Most of the migrants identified were from Eritrea,
sub-Saharan Africa, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
