President Sergio Mattarella said
Tuesday that the government, leadership class and social forces
"must put ideals and vision before the ephemeral search for
consensus at all costs, sometimes obtained with gross
simplifications and demagoguery."
He said the "moment for Europe and the whole world is not
easy. There is a concrete risk that divisive forces, terrorist
threats, economic crises, and migratory flows lead to dangerous
leaps backward".
Mattarella was speaking at a ceremony for the anniversary
of the First World War at Asiago, one of the key WWI
battlegrounds between Italy and Austria.
