President Sergio Mattarella on
Monday congratulated Austrian President-elect Alexander Van der
Bellen on his victory over rightwinger Norbert Hofer.
"Today, the friendship between Austria and Italy is... a
solid anchor to strengthen the European project, which has been
shaken by numerous and sometimes brand-new challenges,"
Mattarella wrote in a letter to Van der Bellen.
"I will be especially delighted to work with you for the
greater good of our two countries and our continent, in the
certainty that Austria and Italy will continue in future to be a
model of progressive integration in the name of the common
European design," Mattarella wrote.
