A man who injured ex premier
Silvio Berlusconi with a souvenir replica of Milan cathedral at
a rally in December 2009 has been released from probation,
judicial sources have said.
Former electrical engineering technician Massimo Tartaglia,
who has a history of psychological problems, was acquitted of
aggravated assault charges by a preliminary hearings judge in
2010 on grounds he was not of sound mind at the time of the
attack.
However, he was placed on probation and ordered to remain
at a mental health rehabilitation facility for a year and then
under the care of the local mental health services.
On Wednesday a surveillance court judge lifted the
probation on grounds Tartaglia no longer represented a risk to
society.
He now works part-time as a gardener for a local
cooperative and he is said to be in good mental health.
Berlusconi suffered a broken nose and two chipped teeth
when Tartaglia hurled the spiked statuette at him after an
outdoor political rally in Milan on December 13.
