Premier Matteo Renzi on Thursday
reiterated he would quit if he loses an October referendum on
Constitutional reform to make Italy's political machinery
cheaper and easier to use. He said the referendum "regards
specific points we've been talking about for 30 years," such as
the scrapping of 'perfect bicameralism'. But as well as being
judged on its merits the referendum will also be a judgement on
him personally, the premier said. The reform turns the Senate,
which is currently on a par with the House, into a leaner,
regionally based body to make law-making more efficient.
