European Commissioner for the
Euro Valdis Dombrovskis said Thursday that the EU executive was
contemplating the issue of extra spending to boost security in
the face of terrorism and to tackle the asylum-seeker crisis.
"The Commission has considered the problem and the consequent
increase in spending for refugees (with respect to last year),"
he said. As for security spending, he said: "the Commission
understands the problem we have to address as the Stability Pact
does not allow us to exclude the issue". Dombrovskis said
judgements on national budgets and Italy's request for the use
of the flexibility clause in the application of European rules
were "premature" and would come in May.
