Premier Matteo Renzi said on
Wednesday that the hatred of the anti-establishment 5-Star
Movement (M5S) towards him and his government has gone beyond a
joke.
Renzi alleged that an M5S councillor in his home town of
Florence had tried to turn Italy's Liberation Day national
holiday on Monday into a "brawl".
"He said that April 25 is a day of national mourning
because Italy is once again occupied by evil, unscrupulous
people, much worse than in the 20th century," Renzi said.
"When hatred for an opponent goes beyond the ridiculous,
you realise there is only one thing to do - keep working hard to
make Italy a civil country where the ruling majority and the
opposition debate without insulting each other".
He also blasted the abuse that veterans of the Jewish
Brigade who helped the effort to liberate Italy from Fascism and
Nazi occupation at the end of World War II were subjected to at
a Liberation Day march on Monday.
"As in the past, they tried to kick out the Jewish
Brigade from the march in Milan," Renzi said. "Honour to the
Brigade who fought for our freedom".
