The Indian Supreme Court on
Tuesday extended Italian marine Massimiliano Latorre's permit to
stay in Italy until September 30, 2016, ANSA learned.
Latorre is one of two Italian marines accused of killing
two Indian fisherman in 2012 during an anti-piracy mission - a
case that is at the centre of a long diplomatic dispute between
Rome and New Delhi.
The other marine, Salvatore Girone, is not permitted to
leave India.
New Delhi allowed Latorre to return to Italy for treatment
after he had a stroke in 2014.
Italy has repeatedly contested India's jurisdiction amid
long delays and last year it took the case to an international
court of arbitration in The Hague.
Italy has asked the arbitration tribunal to allow Girone,
who has also had health problems, to return to Italy for the
duration of the arbitration process, which is expected to take
years.
