Giorgia Meloni, the leader of
the Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, said Tuesday that Italy's
traditional centre right alliance was over after Silvio
Berlusconi's Forza Italia failed to back her bid to become Rome
mayor in June's local elections.
Meloni has the backing of the Northern League, but
Berlusconi is sticking by the bid of Guido Bertolaso even though
the former civil protection chief is doing badly in the opinion
polls.
"The centre right as we know it is a closed experience,"
Meloni told Mediaset television.
"A new thing is forming to give a home and something to
believe in to citizens who think like us".
