The Lower House on Wednesday
approved a water management bill with 243 in favor, 129 against
and two abstaining.
Lawmakers from the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S)
staged a protest during the vote, saying the government was de
facto disregarding the results of a 2011 referendum in which a
majority of voters said they do not want water services
privatized.
They waved flags from that referendum, shouting "Water is
not for sale". The session was suspended after the vote due to
M5S protest.
The bill was also criticized by the small splinter Italian
Left (SI) party, which applauded the rowdy M5S action.
The bill now goes to the Senate.
