Overcrowding in Italian prisons
has reached 106%, with an increase of 1,331 prisoners over the
past 15 months, said the Antigone Association in its 12th annual
'Italy Prisons' report released on Friday.
Italy had 53,495 prisoners as of March 31, 2016, and "at
least 3,950 people without a regulation bed", the report said.
The report said just under 9,000 prisoners were living in
less than 4 square metres, the minimum standard established by
the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture.
The report cited progress since a peak in overcrowding in
2010, when the prison population stood at 68,258, but also noted
the possibility of a trend inversion.
The report said 19,037 prisoners had less than three years
to serve on their sentences, while 1,633 prisoners were serving
life sentences, an increase on 2011 when the figure stood at
1,446.
