Vatican spokesman Father
Federico Lombardi said Thursday that there were no plans for
Pope Francis to meet Bernie Sanders when Hillary Clinton's rival
to be the Democratic Party's presidential candidate visits the
Holy See. Sanders is set to be among a number of politicians
attending a conference organised by the Pontifical Academy of
Social Sciences in the Vatican on Friday and Saturday. "As far
as I know, there will be no meeting with Sanders," Lombardi told
reporters. Sanders, the first credible Jewish presidential
hopeful, had voiced hope that he would be able to meet the pope,
spurring some reports that a meeting between Francis and the
Democratic socialist Vermont Senator was on the cards. At the
Vatican conference, Sanders has said he will denounce the
"idolatry of money".
