Premier Matteo Renzi said on a
live Facebook and Twitter feed Wednesday that the government has
allocated 450 million euros to clean up the so-called Land of
Fires in the southern Campania region, where mafia groups have
been illegally dumping toxic waste for years. "We will get rid
of that authentic shame," he said in answer to questions from
the public. "We will never have to talk about the Land of Fires
again because we will clean up that area". He also reiterated
his administration's commitment to a massive environmental
clean-up and revamp of a huge former steel plant site at Bagnoli
near Naples. "We went to Bagnoli," he said. "It has been left to
rot for years - filth left behind by the inept political leaders
of the past... we will clean it up, and it will be returned to
the people of Naples".
