Premier Matteo Renzi said on a
live Facebook and Twitter feed Wednesday that the government is
at work to build infrastructure, roads and rail links for better
access to the southern city of Matera, which has been declared
the 2019 European Capital of Culture. The Basilicata tourist
mecca is famed for its UNESCO-listed 'Sassi' City of Stone that
has formed the backdrop to several films including Pier Paolo
Pasolini's The Gospel According to St Matthew and Mel Gibson's
The Passion of the Christ. The premier said a bridge over the
Messina Strait connecting the island of Sicily to the Calabria
region on the mainland "will be built, but after priority public
works" such as the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway.
