Minister Sameh Shoukry has said that it may be possible to get
around the Constitutional obstacles that prevent the authorities
in Cairo handing over the telephone records requested by Rome
prosecutors for the investigation into the murder of Italian
researcher Giulio Regeni. However, Shoukry also told a press
conference after an Egyptian-Burundi ministerial meeting that
the Regeni probe in Cairo may last for many more months. "The
Egyptian side answered almost all the questions from the Italian
side and only rejected a request that would have been against
the Egyptian Constitution," Shoukry said, according to daily
newspaper Al Watan. "But the aim of this request will be
satisfied within the framework of the investigations and
enquiries to uncover the truth about this crime. The Egyptian
security authorities are willing to cooperate with the Italians
but the issue requires a lot of time," he added, recalling that
the probe into the death of Egypt's general prosecutor lasted a
year.
